Vetter Adds Serialization Service

Responds to stricter guidelines aimed at combatting counterfeit drugs

Vetter has added a flexible serialization service in response to stricter guidelines from regulatory authorities aimed at combatting counterfeit drugs. Vetter’s customizable solutions aim to serve as a basis for pharma and biopharma companies’ own track-and-trace programs to optimize their supply chain.

In some countries, such as Turkey, India, China, and Argentina, regulators already call for drugs to be serialized, and other markets will soon follow suit, including South Korea, Brazil, the U.S., and the EU. However, the requirements and guidelines are country specific, requiring flexible solutions to meet differing requirements. Vetter is offering various options for the serialization of drugs, including making available different serial number and code formats, interfaces and reports or various aggregation depths. For example, in South Korea serialization will be included on the item level by 2015, while China will include 1D linear codes as well as aggregation with shipping boxes.

“Our serialization service allows for unique identification of the unit level and transportation packaging,” said Thomas Otto, Vetter managing director. Therefore, we are providing a flexible response to the stricter demands of official agencies, while at the same time actively contributing to greater drug safety. Our customers benefit additionally from the fact that they can use the new service as a basis for their own track-and-trace program. Transparency in distribution prevents counterfeits, but it also promotes greater efficiency for processes along the supply chain.”
